Legalities of AI content creation

"Marketers, and those who use AI-generated content in your work, this is a must-read post (and the most important article I have co-written in at least 10 years)! It is on the topic of the legalities of using AI in your work. If you are worried about getting yourself or your organization into trouble with regard to copyright law, this post is for you." -Natalie Lambert, Co-author

Using AI for content generation raises many questions including,

  1. How does an AI platform use data and information provided to it for its own purposes?

  2. Who “owns” the copyright to AI-generated content?

  3. Who bears responsibility when the published output is incorrect, made up, or plagiarized?

US law does not allow for copyright protection on works created solely by AI. Currently, the U.S. Copyright Office requires that the author of a work of authorship must be human, not an AI.

While the UK provides copyright protection for AI-generated works with no human creator to the AI prompter.

3 Tech Pioneers on What to Expect Next in AI

In a recent World Economic Forum discussion, AI pioneers Mustafa Suleyman, CEO, Microsoft AI, Aidan Gomez, Co-founder & CEO, Cohere and Yann LeCun, VP & Chief AI Scientist at Meta shared their insights on the future of AI.

They predict that AI will have a profound impact on society, particularly through generative AI and large language models (LLMs), which are expected to bring significant productivity gains in sectors like healthcare. For instance, AI could potentially give doctors back 40% of their time currently spent on administrative tasks, effectively doubling the workforce.

The experts agree that the Turing Test may need an update to reflect AI’s evolving capabilities. They foresee AI reshaping the economy in the next decade, marking a transformational moment in history.

The next stage will be AI taught on its interactions with the physical world. “So we're still far from having really intelligent systems, but hopefully we'll have them and then people will interact with those things on a daily basis."
